What Dinosaur Has 500 teeth

Nigersaurus is a 30-foot-long plant-eating dinosaur that lived 110 million years ago (having more than 500 teeth in its skull ) in what is now Niger’s Sahara Desert. Nigersaurus lived in a lush environment alongside the predatory dinosaur Suchomimus, the plant-eaters ouranosaurus and lurdusaurus, and super croc. Nigersaurus had a delicate skull and an extremely wide mouth lined with teeth specially adapted for browsing plants close to the ground.

This bizarre, long-necked dinosaur is characterized by its unusually broad, straight-edged muzzle tipped with more than 500 replaceable teeth. The original fossil skull of Nigersaurus is one of the first dinosaur skulls to be digitally reconstructed from CT scans.

What are Nigersaurus dinosaurs?

Nigersaurus was a plant-eater (herbivore) that lived in Africa during the Cretaceous period, between about 119 and 99 million years ago. Nigersaurus was relatively small for a Sauropod dinosaur - it was about 30 feet (9 meters) long and weighed about 4 tons. Its bones were hollow and had many air spaces, and as a result, fossils do not tend to be well-preserved and it was poorly known until recently. The most unusual feature of Nigersaurus was its style of feeding.

Its mouth was the widest part of its head and was equipped with several hundred small sharp teeth. As one tooth wore out, it was replaced by another (up to 9 replacement teeth lay behind each cutting tooth), perhaps as often as once per month. Nigersaurus is believed to have eaten like a lawnmower, taking it prestigious quantities of low-lying vegetation.

Nigersaurus is also noted for having neural spines on its vertebrae. In life, flesh or skin was probably stretched between these.

  6. Nigersaurus lived in Africa.
  7. Nigersaurus was a herbivore (plant-eater).
  8. Nigersaurus had a very unusual mouth for a Sauropod - it had a wide intake like a vacuum cleaner (wider than the rest of its skull), and after taking in the food, it chewed it using hundreds of small sharp teeth.

Q. Who named nigersaurus?

The first bones of Nigersaurus were collected in the 1950s by French paleontologists, though the species was not named until 1999 after Sereno's team member Didier Dutheil spotted skull bones in Niger in 1997. The species is named after French paleontologist Philippe Taquet, who worked earlier on Nigersaurus.

Q. What does a nigersaurus look like?

Like all sauropods, Nigersaurus was a quadruped with a small head, thick hind legs, and a prominent tail. Among that clade, Nigersaurus was fairly small, with a body length of only 9 m (30 ft) and a femur reaching only 1 m (3 ft 3 in). Q. What dinosaur has 800 teeth?

Triceratops, the three-horned frilled plant-eating dinosaur that everyone knows and loves, may have had a secret weapon in its 800 teeth. New research shows there was a lot more to Triceratops' bite than meets the eyes. Triceratops is one of the most iconic dinosaurs of all time.

Q. What time period was the nigersaurus?

125 million years ago - 100.5 million years ago (Albian - Aptian)

Q. Where was nigersaurus found?

Nigersaurus lived 110 million years ago in what is now Niger, West Africa. Although the fossils were found in the Sahara Desert, when Nigersaurus lived the area was a floodplain with wide rivers, conifer forests, and lush vegetation.

Q. Where are nigersaurus fossils found?

The first Nigersaurus fossils were found around 50 years ago in the Erlhaz Formation, located in Niger's Ténéré Desert.
