Data Consumed for Google Meet

Google Meet is one of the most widely used video conference services by schools and colleges in the Lockdown era due to Covid-19. If you are a student, you may be thinking that how much data is spent by Google Meet for 1 hour of the video conference.

Here I would like to tell you that Google Meet’s average bandwidth per participant is 3.2Mbps inbound and 1.8Mbps outbound. Data consumption of about 2.25GB per hour for high-quality.  By default, Meet automatically changes the inbound and outbound bandwidth depending on the connection. This result depends upon the data consumption rates. Anyway, on the mobile version Google Meet uses very little data — in our usage, it was around 500 MB per hour.

I would like also to discuss here what is the data consumption of other video apps-

1. Zoom- One to One- 540MB per hour for standard high-quality. Group video calls- 2.4GB per hour
2. Google Meet- 2.25GB per hour in high quality.
3. Skype- one to one-900MB of data per hour. 5 people - 1.8GB per hour and 7 people -3.6GB per hour.
4. Microsoft Teams- 450MB of data per hour.
5. Slack- 1.2GB+ of data per hour.
6. Google Hangouts- 1.4GB an hour.

How to Estimate the Data Usage?

It is very simple you can measure the data usage by looking at bandwidth numbers of video calling platforms. Just add inbound and outbound bandwidth and how long conference calls will continue to receive data usage estimates. Note that bandwidth is usually mentioned in Mbps (megabits). To convert it to Mbps (megabytes) you have to divide this number by 8, which is how mobile data is calculated. Again, this will only give you an estimate — actual consumption will vary with other factors.
